Bariatric patients gathered in June at Houston Northwest Medical Center to celebrate losing a combined 1,285 pounds (between 16 patients) following gastric bypass surgery. The hospital sponsored a fashion show and awards ceremony in which patients showed off their new looks and discussed their lives before and after weight loss.
“Each of our patients has worked hard to get to where they are today, and it shows,” Linda Mercier, RN, MSN, CEO at Houston Northwest Medical Center, said in a news release. “Losing weight is such a great accomplishment for those who have been overweight or obese for a good part of their lives.”
HNMC is a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, a distinction given by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and is designated a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, among other designations.
HNMC also has earned Disease-Specific Certification from The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. The designation demonstrates HNMCs commitment to the highest level of care for its stroke patients, according to a news release. “Certification is a voluntary process, and I commend the hospital for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves,” Jean Range, RN, MS, CPHQ, executive director of The Joint Commissions disease-specific care certification program, said in a news release.
In addition to TJCs designation, HNMC received the American Heart Associations Get With The Guidelines programs Heart Failure Gold Plus Achievement recognition.
“Earning [these]awards has truly been a team effort that recognizes the contributions of our nurses, allied health professionals and medical staff,” Mercier said in the release.
Meanwhile, a robotic surgery open house Aug. 18 at HNMC gave the public hands-on experience using the da Vinci robotic surgical system. Physicians and visitors watched a short presentation and sat at the controls to get an idea of how the surgery is performed. HNMC uses the system for uterine fibroid surgery, ovarian cysts, hysterectomies, and urological and general surgery procedures.
