The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses has unveiled the first award honoring exceptional med-surg units in the United States.
The AMSN PRISM Award will recognize exemplary nursing practice, leadership and outcomes among the largest group of nurses practicing in U.S. hospitals.
“Our members have asked for recognition of med-surg units, and its now a reality,” AMSN President Sandra Fights, RN, MS, CMSRN, CNE, said in announcing the award.
The award, which stands for “Premier Recognition In the Specialty of Med-Surg,” is co-sponsored by the AMSN and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board, an affiliate organization that certifies med-surg nurses.
The award will be given to outstanding acute care/med-surg units or adult/pediatric units classified as med-surg. Qualifying units may apply throughout the year for a $500 fee, with applicants undergoing a rigorous peer-review process. The award is valid for three years, and units may reapply if they wish.
Winning units will be honored with special ceremonies at their facility during which a representative of the AMSN or MSNCB will personally present them with a commemorative plaque. Winners will be announced at the AMSN annual convention each year, on www.amsn.org and in AMSN publications.
With more than 600,000 nurses practicing in the specialty in the U.S., med/surg nurses are the largest group of specialty nurses working in hospital settings, according to the AMSN. The acronym PRISM represents the broad spectrum of patient care responsibilities of med/surg nurses, Fights said.
The AMSN and MSNCB launched the award to inspire nurses to strive for the highest levels of patient safety and quality, Fights said. It represents a prestigious accomplishment and the compassion, commitment and connection that characterize med-surg nurses.
Specifically, the award celebrates units that exhibit effective leadership, recruitment and retention of competent staff members, evidence-based practice, positive patient outcomes, a healthy work environment and lifelong learning of unit staff members.
