Nurses at JFK Medical Center in Edison, N.J., recently participated in a Pressure Ulcer Prevention Care Contest, based on the centers pressure ulcer prevention protocol. Contestants were asked to create a care plan based on the protocol. Submissions were judged based on creativity, realism and best utilization of the prevention protocol.
ED staff nurse Jean Zissler, RN, won first place for her entry “Preventing Pressure Ulcer Starting from ED.” Nine nurses also received participation awards for their entries.
The goal of the contest was to engage the nurses in incorporating JFKs pressure ulcer prevention protocol into their care plans, while at the same time encouraging critical thinking.
“I was very impressed by the idea of the contest and by the high caliber of the submissions,” Pat Rackovan, RN, BSN, MA. and the facilitys CNO, said in a news release. “But awarding the winners is only the first step in this initiative. The next step is to disseminate the winning care plans to all of the nurses and encourage them to utilize the pressure ulcer prevention protocol. “
The pressure ulcer prevention protocol was developed based on each subscale of the Braden Scale.
“We want to get the nurses to think when they develop their pressure ulcer care plans,” said Laura Mularz, RN, APN, MSN, ACNS-BC, NE-BC, director of education and organizational development. “Even if two patients have the same Braden score, they could have two different risk profiles. Therefore, the pressure ulcer prevention care plan should be individualized to that particular patient. The pressure ulcer prevention protocol is the tool the nurses can use to help them develop their plan.”
The winners were honored by Mularz and Huifang Cheng, RN, BSN, CCRN, CWCN, clinical program manager, wound care.
Dr. Robert Bayly, vice president of quality and safety, said, “The pressure ulcer prevention program at JFK Medical Center has significantly decreased the hospital-acquired pressure ulcer rate. The care plan contest is just the latest among many initiatives that have been rolled out as part of our program.”
