The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American College of Nurse Practitioners have finalized merger plans.
As of Jan. 1, the two groups will join together as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. With about 40,000 members, the new AANP will be the largest professional membership organization in the country for nurse practitioners of all specialties.
The consolidation comes at a time when fewer physicians are pursuing primary care medicine and nurse practitioners are playing an increasingly critical role in providing access to high-quality primary, acute and specialty care, according to a news release. This need is even more urgent with the Affordable Care Act moving forward, adding a projected 30 million Americans to the rolls of the insured by 2022.
By consolidating, the groups hope to add a unified voice to the growing movement working to ensure nurse practitioners can practice to their fullest potential, thus best serving patients and their families.
“The nurse practitioner community has made it clear that they support this alliance and share our vision for one entity that represents the very best of what we have to offer as healthcare providers,” Angela Golden, RN, DNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, president of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, said in the news release. “Coming together better serves our members and benefits our patients who need nurse practitioners now more than ever.”
“Todays healthcare environment demands more efficiency and innovation as we look to control costs and improve outcomes,” said Jill Olmstead, RN, MSN, NP-C, president of the ACNP. “This consolidation exemplifies how collaboration and future-forward thinking can bring about positive changes across the healthcare spectrum.”
Leaders from both the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the ACNP will play key roles in governing the new organization, according to the news release.
David Hebert, who has been CEO of ACNP, will be the CEO of the new AANP. Golden will be president of the new organization. Ken Miller, RN, PhD, CFNP, FAAN, president-elect of ACNP, will become the co-president of the new AANP with Golden at the organizations conference in June 2013.
