Hospice Southeastern Connecticut CEO receives nursing leadership honor

Carol L. Mahier, RN, MSN, CHPCA, president and CEO of Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, Norwich, Conn., was honored Nov. 16 with the Judith Hriceniak Award for Excellence in Nursing Leadership by the Connecticut Association of Home Care and Hospice at their annual conference in Rocky Hill, Conn.

The Hriceniak Award is the association’s highest honor and is presented to an RN who has supervisory or CEO responsibilities.

To receive the Hriceniak Award, a nursing supervisor or CEO must serve as a visionary role model in the home care field and inspire others.

The recipient also must show creativity, high energy and incorporate changing technology into the practice of nursing and patient education.

Mahier, who has led Hospice Southeastern Connecticut for 25 years, previously served as president of the Hospice Council of Connecticut and has served on many CAHCH committees since the merger of the two organizations in 2008.

She also was recognized for helping revamp state hospice residence regulations. Her work with other stakeholders for several years was instrumental in gathering support from residents, professionals and legislative members. The updated regulations were signed by Gov. Daniel Malloy in June 2012.
