St. Vincent’s Medical Center announced Nov. 19 that it has become one of only three hospitals in Connecticut to achieve Magnet recognition for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

With this achievement, St. Vincent’s Medical Center joins a group of fewer than 400 healthcare organizations to achieve the honor nationwide.

“Magnet recognition provides our community with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of patient care,” Dale Danowski, RN, BSN, MBA, senior vice president, COO/CNO, said in a news release. “Achieving Magnet recognition reinforces the culture of excellence that is a cornerstone of how we serve our community. It’s also the tangible evidence of our nurses’ commitment to providing the very best care to our patients, of which we are extremely proud.”

The Magnet designation also applies to the St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Westport Campus, which is an inpatient psychiatric hospital providing behavioral health and addiction services to children, adolescents and adults.

“Our nurses have an incredible sense of pride, and their passion is reflected in our mission to deliver the best care to every patient,” Deborah L. Owens, RN, MSN, NE-BC, Magnet program director, said in the release. “We have an amazing nursing staff that has set the bar for excellence high. Patients and their families can be assured that St. Vincent’s nurses are among the best in the United States.”

St. Vincent’s also recently was named one of only four hospitals in Connecticut to receive an “A” Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog Group, and received the John D. Thompson Award from the Connecticut Hospital Association for its safety program.
