Kent General Hospital nurse wins outstanding educator award

Gretchen Massey, RN, BSN, PCCN, a clinical coordinator on the intermediate care unit at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover, Del., is the 2012 winner of the Geraldine Webb Palladino Outstanding Educator Award.

The award is named for Geraldine “Gerri” Palladino in honor of her contributions and energy in promoting the professional development of hospital staff. Recipients demonstrate the same unwavering commitment to excellence that characterized Palladino’s work at Kent General, according to a news release.

Massey, who frequently mentors other nurses, received the award for her dedication and passion for the nursing profession, including teaching by example.

“It’s wonderful to see the younger generation of nurses grow,” Massey said in the release. “Sharing my knowledge and experience with these nurses means we can work together to create more positive patient outcomes.”

One area of focus for Massey is patient and family education. According to the release, she makes sure her patients and their support teams understand the details of the care plan in place. Many patients and colleagues praise her bedside manner.

“Gretchen consistently identifies areas for improvement in herself and the intermediate care unit,” Debbie Hines, RN, MSN, PCCN, CNML, nurse manager on the unit, said in the release. “Whether participating in research, attending professional practice meetings or implementing changes on the unit, she strives to make us all better.”

Massey began her nursing career as an LPN at Kent General in 1990 and earned her BSN from Wilmington (Del.) University.
