Hospice of the Valley presents RN sisters with DAISY Awards

0

Sisters Kathy Hess, RN, and Cindy Russ, RN, each work two jobs, one at a hospital and one at a hospice. In December, their weekend employer — the nonprofit Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix — gave them DAISY Awards for their exceptional contributions to end-of-life care. The sisters work during the week as hospital nurse case managers.

“Between them, Kathy and Cindy often see 10 to 15 patients each Saturday and Sunday,” award nominator Kenlyn Boyd, RN, nurse at Hospice of the Valley, said in a news release. “When they request a weekend off, we have to have at least two nurses to replace each of them, just to get the same number of visits completed.”

Hess and Russ are consummate pros, Boyd said. “They are compassionate, caring and knowledgeable. There isn’t a visit request that they will not take or cannot manage,” Boyd said in the release. “Kathy has been our pediatric nurse for the past 10 years and sees our babies. Mothers call for Kathy personally on the weekends because they know she will help, advise and support them in their difficult journeys. Cindy is one of the best wound care nurses we have and often finds new ways of addressing wounds to help the healing process.”

Families also call Hospice of the Valley to compliment the sisters. “Kathy and Cindy have a way of explaining medical conditions, procedures and the death process that makes the families feel supported and cared for,” Boyd said in the release.
