Sound Shore Health Systems Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing, Mount Vernon, N.Y., marked the 110th anniversary of its first graduating class in January with a 2013 graduation event.
Joanna Scalabrini, RN, MS, MA, dean of the school, and faculty members celebrated the academic successes of the 26 members of the graduating class who received their associate degrees in nursing.
The Hopfer graduation featured a lamp-lighting ceremony to honor Florence Nightingales contributions as the founder of modern nursing. The lamp lighter was Krista Ventura, president of the June 2012 class.
In their address to fellow graduates, co-valedictorians Susanne Carley and Nikki Lipari, congratulated their class and thanked faculty as well as friends and family for their support.
Carley and Lipari also were honored as co-winners of the annual Stanley A. Kaplan, MD, Award.
Other award winners at the graduation ceremony included Carol Ann Doherty (Jose & Carmen Suarez Memorial Scholarship for Clinical Excellence), Herminio Delgado and Laura Trotman (Herma Pallard Award for Future Nurse Leaders) and Carley (Mount Vernon Hospital Auxiliary Award for Community Service). •
