Presence Saint Joseph joins national earthquake drill

Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Ill., recently joined a national effort to raise awareness about earthquake-safe actions.

At 10:15 a.m. Feb. 7, employees at Presence Saint Joseph participated in the 2013 Great ShakeOut drill. Staff gathered in the medical center’s Winter Garden to practice the “Drop, Cover, Hold On” drill, learn what steps to take in an earthquake emergency and enjoy free milkshakes.

As an official participant in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut, Presence Saint Joseph joined millions of others to take part in the preparedness event. The Great ShakeOut drill is held annually on the anniversary of the 1812 earthquake in New Madrid, Mo. The Great ShakeOut is organized by the Central United States Earthquake Consortium.

Leslie Livett, RN, MS, the trauma nurse coordinator at Presence Saint Joseph, facilitated the training.

“By practicing the earthquake drill in our workplace, we hope to prompt conversations at home about what to do to be safe,” Livett said in the release. “What we do now, before a big earthquake, can help ensure that a disaster does not become a catastrophe.”
