Healthgrades recognizes top hospitals for safety


Healthgrades has issued a new report that measures how well hospitals keep patients safe by preventing medical errors and avoidable complications.

As part of the report, “Variation in Patient Outcomes and the Importance of Being Informed,” Healthgrades recognized 379 hospitals across the nation as Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients for 2013. The distinction places this group within the top 10% of all hospitals for their excellent performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during hospital stays.

During the 2013 study period (2009-11), the award-winning hospitals showed better-than-expected performance in providing safety for patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective outcomes across 13 of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s 14 most common patient safety indicators.

On average, patients treated in award-winning hospitals, when compared with hospitals ranked in the bottom 5% nationwide, were 81% less likely to experience hip fracture following surgery; 80% less likely to experience hospital-acquired pressure ulcers; and 70% less likely to experience a catheter-related bloodstream infection.

“Despite a wide variation in the level of care consumers can receive across hospitals, hospitals are working harder than ever to improve communication and decrease preventable patient safety events,” Evan Marks, executive vice president of information and strategy for Healthgrades, said in a news release. “With the Healthgrades report, consumers can arm themselves with the information needed in order to understand what to expect from hospitals in terms of keeping patients safe and how well their local hospitals perform in this effort.”

Healthgrades also issued a report called “Improving Patient Experience: Identifying the Things That Matter,” analyzing why certain hospitals perform best in measurements of patient experience.

Areas of performance with the highest relationship to receiving positive recommendation scores from patients were those that centered on personal touches: nurse communication, receiving discharge instructions, pain control and receiving help quickly, for example.
