Area hospitals make Truven Health Top 100 Hospitals list

Three local hospitals were selected to be on the Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals list. Truven Health Analytics, formerly Thomson Reuters, recently released its annual study identifying the 100 top U.S. hospitals based on their overall organizational performance.

For the fifth year, Truven Health Analytics also is recognizing the 100 Top Hospitals Everest Award winners — those hospitals among the 100 winners that delivered the greatest rate of improvement over five years. This year, there are 16 Everest Award winners.

Hospitals named to the top 100 hospitals list were Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington in the teaching hospitals category; Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Va., in the medical community hospitals category; and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, Md., in the small community hospitals category. Virginia Hospital Center also was chosen as a Everest Award winner.

According to a news release, the Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; and readmission rates for acute MI, heart failure and pneumonia.

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers evaluated 2,922 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
