Shepherd Center’s care manuals available as iBooks

Shepherd Center in Atlanta has made a comprehensive guide covering personal care issues for people with spinal cord injury available on iTunes. The “Personal Care Manual” was created by the Shepherd Center, which specializes in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with SCI. The manual is considered essential reading for family members and caregivers before discharge. The newly released iBook gives healthcare consumers access to this educational material free of charge, according to a news release.

“Not only do our patients and family members here at Shepherd Center benefit from the creation of these ebooks, but healthcare professionals everywhere can now access our educational materials for free and use them for training or recommend them to patients for at-home care,” Tammy King, RN, MSN, CCM, CRRN, Shepherd Center CNE, said in the release.

The guide can be found at iBooks or iTunes by searching for “Shepherd Center.” The Personal Care Manual is required reading for inpatients in the SCI program and is intended to be helpful to family members and caregivers.

The manual contains a detailed overview of SCI and how to manage bowel and bladder programs, skin and respiratory system issues, and medications. Also covered are topics such as emotional adjustment, alcohol and drug issues, assistive technology and special concerns.

The Shepherd Center’s “Brain Injury: A Guide for Caregivers” also is available as an iBook. This guide features tips and advice for patients’ loved ones after brain injuries. It includes a practical overview of these injuries, a glossary and a list of resources.

Also, the center’s “Spinal Cord Injury: A Guide for Caregivers,” available as an iBook, features advice for a patient’s loved ones after an SCI.
