After tallying the results of an online vote, the LIVESTRONG Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Doak Center for Palliative Care at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, Calif., which provides comfort and support to seriously ill patients, including cancer patients.
The hospital was among 72 organizations nationwide that received LIVESTRONG Foundation Community Impact Project grants, totaling $1.2 million in funding to programs that provide proven cancer support. Nearly 200 hospitals, cancer centers, universities and community organizations nationwide applied for the grants.
The center will use the funding to implement the Advanced Certification for Palliative Care program. The Joint Commissions certification sets standards and acknowledges hospitals providing state-of-the-art palliative care services that relieve symptoms and stress of serious illness and improve patients quality of life. The center will provide tools and training to 20 hospitals and cancer centers nationwide to assist in their efforts to qualify for the certification.
The program has led the palliative care initiative and mentored other programs within Providence Health & Services.
