Nyack (N.Y.) Hospital has received a Susan G. Komen for the Cure 2013 Community Breast Health grant to fund its Screening Coordination Program for the third consecutive year.
The three year-long grants total almost $271,000 for a breast health program that offers a full range of early breast cancer detection services, including screening mammography, high-risk assessment and patient navigation services for uninsured and underinsured women.
The grant will aid Nyacks goal to reduce the disparities in breast cancers impact, morbidity and mortality among the areas traditionally underserved women.
According to a news release, of the 1,065 women who received services in 2011, 12 breast cancers were detected. The patients received patient navigation services to insure they obtained the appropriate care, ranging from surgical intervention to treatments and additional support, including nutritional education for their families. •
