University of Miami opens doors for advanced anesthesia degree

The University of Miami School of Nursing & Health Studies announced the beginning of a new BSN-DNP nurse anesthesia track. The program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the nurse anesthesia specialty has also been accredited by the Council on Anesthesia.

The school is one of only 12 in the nation currently accredited to offer the BSN-DNP degree, nurse anesthesia track, according to a news release. The BSN-DNP program is a terminal, practice-oriented offering devised to prepare baccalaureate-educated registered nurses to become advanced practice nurses to serve as transformational leaders within healthcare systems.

“We are preparing our graduates to interact with an increasingly complex interdisciplinary healthcare environment,” said Nilda Peragallo Montano, RN, DrPH, FAAN, dean of the school of nursing. “The BSN-DNP degree is in line with the Institute of Medicine’s Future of Nursing report’s recommendation that nurses achieve higher levels of advanced education and that they be educated in new ways that better prepare them to meet the needs of the population.”
