Holy Cross achieves Fit-Friendly Worksite recognition


Holy Cross Hospital Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has been recognized as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association for helping employees eat better and move more, according to a news release.

Holy Cross was honored for offering associates physical activity options in the workplace, increasing healthy eating options at work; promoting a wellness culture on the worksite; implementing at least nine criteria outlined by the AHA in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture; and demonstrating measurable outcomes related to workplace wellness.

The Holy Cross workplace offerings include the Healthy Lifestyle Incentive Program, in which associates and their spouses covered under the hospital health insurance plan can earn points that may be used to receive a discount on their health insurance premium.

The points are earned by completing preventive care measures, making healthy lifestyle choices, maintaining health indicators such as blood pressure, attending free lectures offered by the hospital’s physicians and participating in healthy activities. Participants are also enrolled in the Zero Co-Pay program, which offers no co-pay for generic prescriptions for high blood pressure, cholesterol control and diabetes.

According to the AHA, Fit-Friendly Worksites is a catalyst for positive change in the American workforce by helping worksites make their employees’ health and wellness a priority.

Americans spend an average of 47 hours per week at work, according to the AHA, which is 164 hours more per year than a generation ago. The number of sedentary jobs among Americans has accelerated as well, rising 83% since 1950.

The AHA’s goal by the year 2020 is to reduce the rate of death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20%, while also improving the heart health of all Americans by 20%.

Recognition is a critical component of the Fit-Friendly Worksites program. For achieving the honor, Holy Cross is allowed to use the program’s annual recognition seal for internal communications and with external, recruitment-related communications.
