As part of the Hospital Value-based Purchasing Program of the Affordable Care Act, Medicare now is withholding 1% of its regular hospital payments and will use that money to reward hospitals that score well on 20 different quality measures, according to HealthCare.gov. Perhaps no healthcare professionals have a greater chance to affect those scores than nurses because quality care and patient satisfaction begin at the bedside.
In the book “Fostering Nurse-Led Care: Professional Practice for the Bedside Leader from Massachusetts General Hospital,” recently published by Sigma Theta Tau International, nurse executives from Boston share the secrets of the professional practice model that has improved system outcomes and increased patient, family and staff satisfaction for nearly 20 years.
“Transformational leadership is critical to the future of care at the bedside,” Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN, DNP, FAAN, senior vice president for patient care and CNO at Massachusetts General Hospital, said in a news release. “This book offered us the opportunity to provide insights into the contributions of nursing, the influence on leading change and innovation at the bedside, and the unique contributions nurses make to the outcomes of care and health promotion.”
Written by three of Massachusetts Generals top nurse executives — Erickson; Dorothy A.
