The June 3 letter about bathing patients shocked me. I run a special respiratory care unit that is well known for its high acuities, and it is extremely demanding, physically and emotionally. The nurses and PCAs on the unit work as a team. Our patients are bathed daily and as needed with a smile on our face. If they have a central line, they receive a Hibiclens bath.
Patients with Foleys receive care every four hours, patients on vents are positioned at 30 degrees and oral care is given every four hours — no exceptions. The level of care is incredible. Obviously the nurse who wrote the letter encountered disengaged staff who have been allowed to behave as she described. Shame on them. We have zero tolerance for this. If you do not have heart, you should not be in this field.
