Health policy researcher addresses Georgetown nursing graduates

Nearly 200 graduates from Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies in Washington, D.C., received their bachelor’s degrees in health care management & policy, human science, international health or nursing in a ceremony on May 18.

Lisa Simpson, MB, BCh, MPH, FAAP, president and CEO of AcademyHealth, received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Georgetown during the ceremony. According to a news release, she reminded the NHS graduates to display kindness in their professional lives.

“Healthcare in this country is too often unkind,” she said in the release. “A kind word, a kind touch, a kind smile – these are small but oh-so-effective salves for the pain and suffering that so many experience in their lives. You will touch the world with your training and your passion, but you will be remembered for your kindness. We are all of us part of a greater whole.”

Throughout the weekend, bachelor’s and master-level nursing graduates were celebrated at events planned by the school’s department of nursing. The annual pinning ceremony celebrated 64 new BSN nurses, who received the unique Georgetown University nursing pin. A blessing of the hands ceremony honored 16 students from the Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program.

Ayesha Ibrahim, a nursing major, was selected to address the NHS Class of 2013 at a special schoolwide awards ceremony known as Tropaia.

“Whatever it is that makes you tick don’t lose sight of that,” she told her classmates from all four majors, according to the release. “Use that passion that you possess to move forth in your career, reach new heights and leave your mark on this Earth. … I would like to leave you all with one last message, carry the Jesuit principles of cura personalis and being men and women for others with you always.”

This was the first Georgetown graduation attended by students who had completed the online master’s program in nursing, which launched in winter 2011.
