I would love to become a military nurse, but I don’t meet the height requirement. What can I do?

Dear Donna,

I would love to become a military nurse, but my height of 4 feet 1 inch doesn’t meet the requirement. I believe in myself and know I can do whatever taller people can do. How do I pursue a career as a nurse in the military?

Military Nurse

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Military Nurse,

If you do not meet the requirements to enlist, you can become a civilian employee in military hospitals and clinics. Identify the military bases and healthcare facilities in your area by doing an Internet search and then contact the human resources department at these facilities.

You also should look into working at a Veteran’s Administration hospital, clinic or long-term care facility. Usually, the benefits are very good and many nurses make a career out of working for the VA. Check out

Good Luck
