Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore finished atop the honor roll in U.S. News and World Reports annual Best Hospitals rankings.
Of nearly 5,000 medical centers under consideration, 18 made the 2013-14 honor roll by ranking near the top in at least six of 16 specialties. Only 147 facilities received a national ranking in at least one specialty.
Hopkins placed nationally — meaning among the top 50 in the case of most of the specialties — in 15 of 16 specialties. Second-place Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston placed in all 16 specialties. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., finished third and placed in 15 specialties.
“The mission of Best Hospitals is to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face a particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or added risk because of other health problems or age,” Avery Comarow, editor of U.S. News Health Rankings, said in a news release.
“Patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other objective data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.” Another factor was a national survey that asked physicians in each of the 16 specialties to name the hospitals they consider best for the toughest cases in their specialty.
