When applying for jobs, isn’t it illegal for employers to ask your age, especially as an initial screening tool before accepting a resume?

Dear Donna,

When I go online to look for jobs, often they ask a lot of questions. One of them is my birthday. As an older nurse, I’m afraid my age may count against me. I thought it was illegal to ask your age, especially as an initial screening tool before accepting a resume.

Dear Older Nurse,

Because your age is protected information in a pre-employment situation, I would suggest you do not answer that question on online applications. Frankly, in that situation I’m surprised that an employer is even asking it.
