American Childhood Cancer Organization Inland Northwest presented its first annual Golden Heart Award to Eric Miller, RN, BSN, CPN, CHPPN, CPHON, a pediatric oncology nurse at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Childrens Hospital in Spokane, Wash.
The children and the families served by the group determine who will receive the Golden Heart Award, which is sponsored by the Kalispel Tribe and Northern Quest Resort and Casino. The award honors individuals who provide frontline care and service for local children affected by cancer. “Eric was always so quiet and respectful when he came into the room in the middle of the night. We appreciated him so much,” said one parent who nominated Miller. “He really made a hard time more bearable.”
Originally from the Seattle area, Miller attended Spokane Community College, where he graduated in 2006 with an ADN. Upon graduation, he was hired by Sacred Heart Childrens Hospital to work within the pediatric hematology and oncology unit, his first choice of area practice. Miller received his BSN in 2011 from the University of Texas at Arlington, and he has achieved certifications as a pediatric nurse, hospice and palliative pediatric nurse and pediatric hematology and oncology nurse.
His future plans are to become a nurse educator in the collegiate setting to continue to share his love of learning.
