Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, Pa., announced that radiation oncology nurse Maryellen Washko, RN, was the recipient of the 2013 Ellis Greenspan Memorial Award. Washko has worked at the hospital for seven years.
According to a news release, the award is presented annually to recognize a nurse at Grand View who serves as a role model of nursing professionalism and delivers excellence in patient care. Compassion, understanding and exceptional communication skills are among the nomination criteria.
Washko was nominated by co-workers, a physician and patients. According to her nomination form, “she is a true patient advocate. After a consultation is performed, she takes patients and their families by the hand as a true navigator. … She is the very embodiment of holistic care and survivorship. While the youngest member of our team, she may well be the spiritual leader of our passion for caring. She is the team member we can always turn to and be rewarded with a beautiful smile and a can-do attitude.”
Other nominees for the 2013 Ellis Greenspan Memorial Award included RNs Patricia Barndt-Slater, Marianne Buso, Fay Forst-Younger, Lori Kolb, Mary Ann Lear, Jennifer Lewis, Michelle Makin, Stephen Mulholland and Dave Northup and LPNs Roseann Valone and Rachel Yoder. Washko and the other nominees were recognized at a ceremony on May 8.
Patients and their families as well as Grand View staff and physicians make nominations for the Greenspan award each spring.
