Can you tell me how to ensure I get paid for my nursing experience, and whether it is standard practice for a nurse to counter a salary offer?

Dear Donna,

Can you tell me how to get paid for years of experience that I’ve worked as a nurse and whether it is standard practice for a nurse to counter a
salary offer?

I have 12 years OR experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings but left the field for family reasons. I recently applied for an ED position in another hospital and was offered a new graduate wage because I did not have ED experience. I became upset and was told I should know to counter their offer.

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Concerned About Salary

Salary negotiation is common when applying for a new job. However some healthcare facilities have very standard pay scales that don’t leave room for much, if any, salary negotiation. To learn more, read “How to negotiate the salary you want” (
