How do I choose a master’s degree program when I am interested in two areas of study?

Dear Donna,

How do I choose the correct master’s degree program? For the past three years I have worked as an RN in a hospital. I have a strong interest in becoming a diabetic educator and to work in public health and education, but I am not sure how to make it all fit. I am interested in pursuing a master’s degree, but I am not sure if I should focus on public health or education.

Needs a Focus

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Needs a Focus,

What matters most is you get that master’s degree. Which major or focus you choose is less important. Look at the course work and curriculum for each track and choose the one that is most interesting and exciting to you. There is no one correct way to go. Follow your heart and the rest will come together.

To help work it all out, read “How to get back to school ( and “Master the scholarship game” (

Best wishes,
