Texas Health Harris’ neuro services get two thumbs up

The neurodiagnostics lab at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth earned quality distinction for real-time monitoring of a patient’s neurological status during spinal, nerve and brain surgeries. Sixteen healthcare facilities nationwide hold accreditation as a National Lab for Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring from the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists, according to a news release. Accreditation means the board determined intraoperative monitoring at Texas Health Fort Worth complies with strict national guidelines for quality care and patient safety.

“We’re proud to be among the top facilities in the country meeting the standards for safe, quality patient care in neurodiagnostics,” Lillie Biggins, RN, MSN, CNAA, FACHE, hospital president, said in a news release.

While patients undergo neurosurgery at the hospital, their nervous systems are monitored for changes that could lead to complications including paralysis, hearing or vision loss, or stroke. Real-time monitoring helps identify potential risk of injury to the brain.

Also, caregivers in the hospital’s neuro ICU unit have earned recognition for excellence in patient care from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. The Bronze Beacon Award for Excellence honors nursing units that successfully develop, deploy and integrate best practices for quality care of patients and families.

Texas Health Fort Worth’s neuro ICU exceeded the association’s high standards in areas such as staff engagement, clinical outcomes, evidence-based processes and leadership. The 22-bed unit cares for some of the hospital’s most critically ill patients, including those undergoing treatment for stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, neurological trauma and brain tumors.
