Nurse practitioner receives top New Mexico Nursing Excellence award

Anita M. Ralstin, RN, MS, CNS, CNP, a nurse practitioner at the New Mexico Heart Institute in Albuquerque, N.M., was named the New Mexico Distinguished Nurse of the Year for 2013, according to a news release.

The award was presented by Lovelace Health System on behalf of the New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence, which hosted the awards competition and gala, on Nov. 2, according to the release. A total of 170 nominations were submitted for this year’s awards.

Ralstin, a nurse for 41 years, was cited for numerous accomplishments in her profession, including achieving an outstanding 90% patient satisfaction rating (one of the highest percentages of New Mexico Heart Institute staff) and saving the life of a former patient through correctly diagnosing an adverse reaction to a medication, according to the release.

She earned her nurse practitioner degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1995 and was named Outstanding Teacher by graduating seniors at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing in 1992, 1993 and 1994.
