Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains, N.J., celebrated the second full year of its shared governance program with its first Transforming Professional Practice conference.
The Oct. 21 conference helped 60 nurses and other caregivers throughout Chilton and surrounding communities to enhance their profession through education, according to a news release.
Presentations were given by experts in the healthcare field from Chilton, a Pathways to Excellence-designated hospital, and other organizations. Among the presentations were Value of Seeking National Nursing Excellence Designation by Chilton Vice President and CNO Joanne Reich, RN, MA, NEA-BC; Empowering Evidence for Shared Governance by Robert Hess, RN, PhD, FAAN, executive vice president of Global Programming at Gannett Education, Gannett Healthcare Group; and Creating Your Professional Development Plan by Kathleen Burke, RN, PhD, assistant dean in charge of nursing programs and professor of nursing at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
Conference focuses included the value of seeking national nursing excellence designation; evaluation of shared governance models at the unit level; development of a shared governance environment; how staff drives practice at the bedside through the Transforming Care at the Bedside initiative from the American Organization of Nurse Executives and through Care Innovation and Transformation; key outcomes of shared governance councils; and steps in creating a professional development plan, according to the release.
On Dec. 16, Chilton hosted its annual shared governance holiday party for nursing staff. The party celebrated accomplishments including creation and implementation of the shared governance structure, the hospitals Pathway to Excellence journey, development of a nursing research protocol, development of a nursing performance improvement plan and model, and adoption of an evidence-based practice model for nursing.
