I became licensed as an RN 10 months ago and have had trouble finding employment. I am seriously looking into self-employment in home health nursing. I have had trouble finding regulations regarding this for my state. Can you help me find this info? I am checking on additional liability insurance and setting up a LLC.
Dear Nancy replies:
Your business idea sounds like a good one and although it will require a lot of work to get it up and running, it should go well for you once it is established. You might want to check out other competition in your area and also determine how many people in the population surrounding the business might be using your services.
Because state laws can be numerous and complex surrounding the establishment of home health care agencies, you would do best to consult with a nurse attorney or other attorney in your state who establishes businesses for healthcare providers. There is no one law to reference, so help from an expert in the field will be needed.
In the interim, there are several general resources you might want to check out for yourself. They include: “How to Start a Home Health Care Business: Medical Start Up 101″ (2014) (a Kindle book), Marrelli’s” Handbook of Home Health Standards-Revised Printout: Quality, Documentation and Reimbursement, 5th Edition (2011); and “Home Care How To: The Guide to Starting Your Senior in Home Care Business” (2011). These are available online on many booksellers’ websites.
