The American Osteopathic Association, the professional membership organization for the nations more than 104,000 osteopathic physicians and osteopathic medical students, has named Catherine A. Galligan, RN, CPA, MM, as its new chief operating officer and Stephanie H. Drake, MBA, CHHR, as its new chief talent officer and associate executive director of human resources.
Galligan comes to the AOA with an extensive background in healthcare and more than 20 years of experience in operational restructuring and integration of business systems. As CEO, her goal is to help the AOA achieve its strategic goals including increasing awareness of DOs and enhancing customer service to members.
A senior association executive with 15 years of experience in healthcare and information technology fields, Drake will lead the AOAs strategic human resources activities including creating more professional development opportunities for AOA staff and pushing forward a culture of excellence within the association.
Both Cathy and Stephanie bring to the AOA the ideal blend of association and corporate experience, AOA Executive Director and CEO Adrienne E. White-Faines, MPA, said in a news release. Cathys proven leadership in business development and operations coupled with Stephanies expertise in the areas of employee relations and organizational culture will be essential assets as the AOA enhances its customer service and staff development programs to better serve our members.
The AOA represents one of the nations fastest-growing segments of healthcare professionals. The number of DOs has grown more than 200% over the last 25 years. More than half of DOs are under 45 and more than a third are women. With more than 50% of DOs in active practice specializing in one of the primary care areas of medicine, the osteopathic medical profession has a strong tradition of serving in rural and medically underserved areas.
Before joining the AOA, Galligan served as vice president of health initiatives at the American Cancer Society, Illinois Division. In this role, she managed research, patient services and education activities, and administered the societys colorectal screening initiative.
She also held leadership roles with Pfeiffer Treatment Center in Naperville, Ill., Northwestern Memorial Hospital and served as a healthcare consultant for Renwal Consulting, both in Chicago. Galligan began her career as a registered nurse.

Galligan, who resides in Chicago, earned a bachelors degree in accounting from the University of Illinois in Chicago and a masters degree in management from Northwestern University in Chicago. She received her nursing diploma from the former St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Evanston, Ill.
