In order to work in an urgent care center should I have ED experience?

Dear Donna,

In order to work in an urgent care center must I have emergency room experience? I wonder because I was told urgent care centers are for minor
emergencies only.

Wondering About Experience

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wondering About Experience,

While every employer is different in terms of what it requires or prefers, emergency room experience is not an automatic prerequisite to work in urgent care centers. Most of the patients these centers treat have the type of ailments that one would see in an ambulatory health center, clinic or office. Even if an employer stated they required or preferred ED experience, don’t hesitate to apply anyway.

Often preferred and even required experience is negotiable. Just be prepared to articulate exactly why you are well qualified to work there based on your background. Don’t sell yourself short.

Best wishes,
